Satire Hurts/God Bless Stephen Colbert

So if you didn't hear about this, don't feel bad, as it was covered almost nowhere in the media. In fact, aside from its original airing on C-SPAN (this was the White House Correspondents Dinner), Stephen Colbert's stinging satirical speech at the event was mentioned nowhere, and even edited out of repeated airings on C-SPAN. Instead the focus was solely on Bush's act where he and a "twin" made self-deprecating jokes on Bush's pronunciation, etc.

If you are to watch only one thing posted on this blog, make it this one. Amazing.

Later reports that did mention Colbert said that he "just wasn't funny" and that the "audience didn't respond" - well no really, considering they (and the president) were the targets of the humour. And at the end Laura Bush didn't even stand up to shake his hand (well who could blame her, he was dissin' her man!)

The balls it must take to stand up there next to the President and entire press corp and do the act he did. Tough audience as well, but he carried on just as if they were a normal audience who would have reacted a lot more naturally (not sure I'd let myself laugh too much either with the Prez in the room.) Too bad it didn't get much media exposure. Hopefully YouTube and other individual-run blogs and websites will spread the word. Interestingly, the original copy of these clips I had posted from YouTube have been taken down - apparently due to copyright infringement. Half of the clips on YouTube violate copyright, who went after someone for posting the President's White House Correspondents' Dinner? Sounds sketchy to me.

Check out Media Matters' article for more details on the press coverage, or lack thereof.

And God Bless Stephen Colbert.
